En los capítulos de esta obra se analizan los recursos pesqueros del Mar Argentino de acuerdo con el grado de explotación pesquera, considerando los efectivos en estado de: 1- Sobrepesca (merluza (Merluccius hubbsi), algunas especies de peces costeros (Micropogonias furnieri) y demersales australes (Micromesistius australis)); 2- Explotación próxima a los niveles máximos aconsejables (varias especies de peces (Genypterus blacodes y Mustelus schmitti) y de bivalvos (Zygochlamys patagonica), langostino (Pleoticus muelleri), calamar (Illex argentinus)); 3- Factibilidad de desarrollo (algunas especies de peces pelágicos (Engraulis anchoita y Scomber japonicus) y demersal-pelágicos (Macruronus magellanicus), entre otras); y 4- Casos especiales y perspectivas de especies que requieren investigación y monitoreo (algunos crustáceos (centolla (Lithodes santolla) del Canal Beagle, peces cartilaginosos (Squalus acanthias y Dipturus chilensis) y óseos (Patagonotothen ramsayii), cefalópodos (Loligo spp.)). Se presentan asimismo los avances en el desarrollo de la selectividad de artes de pesca y en la maricultura, así como una breve reseña sobre las condiciones oceanográficas y los eventos de mareas rojas tóxicas registrados. Se expone integradamente el estado de los recursos y de las pesquerías en los ríos principales (Paraná, Uruguay y Río de la Plata) de la Cuenca del Plata.

Synthesis of the status of the Argentine Sea and of the del Plata Basin fisheries. Years 1998-1998, updated to 1999. In the chapters included in this work, the fishery resources of the Argentine Sea are analyzed according to the degree of fishing exploitation and considering the stocks in a state of: 1- Overfishing (hake (Merluccius hubbsi), some species of coastal fishes (Micropogonias furnieri) and austral demersal (Micromesistius australis)); 2- Exploitation close to the maximum sustainable levels (several fish species (Genypterus blacodes and Mustelus schmitti) and of bivalves (Zygochlamys patagonica), shrimp (Pleoticus muelleri), squid (Illex argentinus)); 3- Feasibility of development (some species of pelagic fishes (Engraulis anchoita and Scomber japonicus) and demersal-pelagic (Macruronus magellanicus), among others)); and 4- Special cases and perspectives for species that require research and monitoring (some crustaceans (king crab Lithodes santolla) of the Beagle Channel, elasmobranchs (Squalus acanthias and Dipturus chilensis), bony fishes (Patagonotothen ramsayii) and cephalopoda (Loligo spp.)). Progress in the development of fishing gear selectivity and in marine culture and a brief outline on oceanographic conditions and occurrence of toxic red tides registered are also presented. The status of resources and fisheries in the main rivers (Parana, Uruguay and de la Plata) of the del Plata Basin are integrally exposed.
