Summary

A new criterion to build strata for estimating coastal fish abundance by demersal surveys is presented, and results refers to white croaker (Micropogonias furnieri) assesment carried out in the winter of 1994. The pre-stratified design hitherto used to evaluate the winter biomass of the main coastal demersal species within the Aragentine – Uruguay Common Fishing Zone is reviewed. That design involved 21 strata. A new criterion to build strata is proposed, and the winter biomass of white croaker estimated 24,595 t ± 46.55 o/o by new criterian (6 strata). A further post-estratification method was performed to identify the main areas of commercial fishing, and their corresponding size structure of croaker. According to this procedure, the biomass was evaluated to be about 19,719 t ± 22.09 o/o. The new survey design reduced the total area to be covered by 24 o/o. Therefore, it allows for increasing sampling effort withing the most important areas of coastal fish distribution.
