Summary

Mackerel (Scomber japonicus). Commercial landings at the Mar del Plata port (38°LS – 57°30′) of the fisheries seasons 1991/92 and 1992/93. This report deals with the commercial landings of bonaerensis mackerel at the port of Mar del Plata during the years 1991 and 1992. The total catch was the 6236,92 t in 1991 and 4912.60 t in 1992. A total of 34 fish samples were taken for total length distributions (N=5593), and 4 sub-samples (N=222 individuals) were analyzed to record individual data (total length and weight, sex, sexual stage, age from otoliths reading). Length (mm) – weight (g) relationships by fishing season were fitted as customary. The von Bertalanffy Growth Function in length was fitted by using the methods of Allen. The estimation of natural mortality rate (M) was calculated by different methods. The estimation of total mortality rate (Z) was calculated by application of the capture curve. An inverse relationship was observed between catch per unit of effort (CPUE) and surface temperature. The optimal temperature limit was found at about 19-20 °C. Between the years 1991 and 1992 a difference in the fishing succes of the reference boat was observed, as a consequence of a motor change from 72 HP to 200 HP.
