If the fishing effort is properly standardized, the catch per unit of effort may be proportional to biomass (C/f = q * Bmed). A multiplicative factorial model was applied to the ling catch and effort data recorded by the argentine bottom trawl fleet between 1986 and 1996. The relative fishing power of the fleet strata was estimated and the effort standardized to obtain normalized CPUEs. Provided that they were estimated in the same spatial and temporal situation, there were no differences between the normalized CPUEs and the nominal CPUEs because ling is caught mainly as by-catch in the argentine hake fishery. A general picture of the spatial and temporal distribution of ling as reflected by the commercial fleet operations was also obtained.
